Canon DSLRs Home

Canon 1100D and 600D DSLRs.  These cameras look identical from the front but are a little different at the back.  For example the screen at the back of the 600D hinges out and can be set at any angle;  the screen on the 1100D is fixed.  Both have APS-C CMOS sensors (about 22.2 by 14.7 mm), the 1100D has 4,272 by 2,848 pixels (12.2 megapixels), a pich of 5.19μm.  The 600D has 5,184 by 3,456 pixels (18.0 megapixels) each of 4.3μm.  As far as astrophotoraphy is concerned, all other specifications are the same.  In my case, my D600 has had its internal filter removed giving it much higher sensitivity in the red (Hα for example).  This does mean that the internal colour balances are useless.

I have become aware that these cameras have a non-linear response to light. There are good reasons for this in normal use as it extends the dynamic range to match better with what occurs in scenic pictures in particular.  What effect this has on astrophotography I am not sure but I have investigated the effect it has on pictures of the Moon.
