My Observatory.  13. Furniture. Home

The only important piece of internal furniture is a desk on which to put the computer or to work on.  I have put mine in the west corner where I think it will be least likely to get in the way.  I shall never observe in this direction because of the big ash tree, nor in the opposite direction (neighbour's apple tree).  The north corner might be better for the computer, but would get more in the way of human observers.  I will see when the telescope is mounted.
It is made by fixing batons (off-cuts of 47×22 timber) to the walls supporting a plain top with the aid of a single leg.  The batons are joined by lap joints, but only need to slot into one another; they are not glued.

The top is the door from a kitchen cupboard we recently replaced.  It rests on the frame and is cut around the corner posts.  It is held in place by a small piece of plywood secured to the underside and which fits against the leg.

This is the inside of my cupboard.  I have these cases that I use to hold all the bits and pieces I need with the telescope and, for now at least, I shall continue to use them.  The cupboard is wide enough to take two cases side by side, and I put in a shelf to hold two more with enough space above to open a case.  The shelf is supported by a frame just like my table (except that the lap-joints are slightly different because of the way it is all supported).  The rear member is screwed to the uprights of the frame, the side pieces are screwed to the diagonal braces and the front piece is supported by the side pieces.
