NGC 6946, Caldwell 12  The Fireworks GalaxyHome

NGC 6946, also known as C12, is an intermediate (between barred and non-barred) spiral galaxy in Cepheus.  It was discovered by William Herschel on 9 September 1798.  It is believed to be about 10 million light years away and it subtends 11 minutes of arc.  This makes it about 32,000 light years in diameter.  (Compare this with 100,000 light years for the Milky Way.)  It seems to contain an abnormally large number of starburst regions and 9 supernovae have been seen there between 1917 and 2009.

I am a little concerned that I have overdone the gamma enhancement somewhat.
To see the image before the enhancement move your mouse pointer over the image.
