Eureka Farm Camp Site

This pleasant camp site is situated about 4 miles South of Lusaka on the road to Kafue. A small swimming pool and bar, but no camp shop or restaurant.

The first wildlife seen was not welcome since it was wandering around the kitchen. Not appreciated by the cooks! Although Juliet did it the hard way, the spider was NOT in the bowl!

We had a corner of the site to ourselves - quiet, but not too far from the Bar! A pair of Zebras made themselves at home, yours truly totally ignored! Of the two telescopes in the middle picture, the one on the right was mine, the one on the left belonged to an independent camper. It was a special Coronado Solarscope suitable for viewing prominences. The owner kindly let me take a photograph through it, showing a couple of prominences and surface markings. By strange coincidence he was on the safari truck that gave us a lift home when ours broke down in the Livingstone Wild Life Park!

The dry season and mid winter, but the shrubs were in full bloom. Only a few hundred yards from the tents a woodland glade harboured Waterbuck, Puku and Zebra.

The Sun set early and quickly, so our usual barbecue dinner, courtesy of our excellent local cook Jeff, was always in the dark - candlelight made a pleasant setting. And breakfast in the sunshine was also most enjoyable.

The evenings got pretty cold, but a brazier provided comfort, and drumming kept us warm! The South African Ridgeback was a frequent (and friendly!) visitor. The camp site was situated 4 miles south of Lusaka, so although there was some sky glow to the north, the southern skies were clear, dark and full of stars - the Southern Cross is in the centre of the picture, with Alpha and Beta Centauri bright to the East and the Milky Way stretching away to the South West. Most of us had never seen this part of the sky!
