Added very much later (2025). For a while in 2003 I owned a JMI NGT 12.5 Split Ring Newtonian. which I bought secondhand from the Patterdale Youth Hostel (now closed). This substantial instrument had an excellent mirror giving very good views 'when in good collimation'. But because it had to be stripped down for transport, and at the time I was still living in a light polluted area, that could sometimes be a problem. Also the base section was heavy and awkward to put in a car although at the time I was strong enough to manage it. But it tracked well and as I say gave excellent views.
I eventually sold it to an Astronomical society in Norway. Two of their members, big strong men (!) came over (with large rucksacs) on a ferry to collect it, and stayed the night. One of them was one of the only two Norwegian members of the Barefoot Society! Sure enough, we walked out for a drink on a cold damp November night and when we got to the pub, his feet were still warm. Amazing. This is the only photograph I can find of that telescope. See the bare feet!
