Moon and Saturn 2nd Februaray 2007 Home

These pictures were taken on the night of 2nd February 2007 when the Moon was full.  They are all composites of two pictures taken with different exposures, one to resolve the Moon and one to resolve Saturn.

Taken using a 135-mm SLR lens and my Toucam 740K camera.
Taken using a 270-mm SLR lens and my Toucam 740K camera.
A mosaic of two pictures taken with my LX200 fitted with a 0.33 focal reducer giving a focal length of 800 mm, and my raw-modified Atik 1-HS camera.  The picture has been shrunk by 50% to fit the page better;  click on the image to see the full-sized picture in a new window.

I had to take three pictures to make this one.  The first exposed the Moon correctly and captured about as much of it as is possible with this focal length.  The second captured Saturn with a much longer exposure.  The third captured both with very little of the Moon, over-exposed, and Saturn under-exposed;  this one was used to get the first two in their correct relative positions.  In order to take this third picture, the camera had to be rotated 90° relative to its normal position (with north at the top) because the CCD chip is wider than it is high.  The final picture was rotated back to put north at the top again.
