The Moon's South-western Quadrant Home

Move your mouse over the picture to see the names of the various features.

This picture shows much of the south-west quadrant of the Moon.
The scale markers are very deceptive but represent very approximately 200 Km north and east and apply at Tycho, but both scale and direction differ markedly in different parts of an area so close to the pole.  The third arrow points approximately along the prime meridian.
The picture was taken with a ToUcam attached to my LX200 with a 0.33 focal reducer on 12th November 2005 at 20:27 UT, when the Moon was 11.5 days old.

Date and Time: 12th November 2005 20:27 UT
Camera: ToUcam 740K
Telescope: LX200 with Meade 0.33 focal reducer, IR-block and Neodymium filters
Capture: K3CCDTools. High gamma, 1/500", 27% gain, 483 frames
Processing: Registax. 177 frames stacked. Wavelet 1 = 10, histogram 18-220
SE Quadrant This picture shows much the same area as above but much later in the lunar cycle.  The picture was taken after full Moon so the lighting is from the other side and goes right to the limb, so we see more of the surface to the west.
It was taken with a ToUcam attached to my LX200 with a 0.33 focal reducer on 16th December 2003 at 04:44 UT, when the Moon was 21.6 days old.

Date and Time: 16th December 2003 04:44 UT
Camera: ToUcam 740K
Telescope: LX200 with Meade 0.33 focal reducer
Capture: K3CCDTools. 50% gamma, 1/500", 10% gain, 305 frames
Processing: Registax. 183 frames stacked. Wavelet 1,2 = 2.5
Clavius Area This is a closer view of the area to the east of Clavius and Tycho.  It was taken in daylight with an IR-pass filter on 15th July 2005 when the Moon was 8.5 days old.  Not only does this view show an area to the east of the one above, but also the light is coming from the other side.
The scale markers are approximately 100 Km north and east and apply at Clavius.

Date and Time: 15th July 2005 18:25 UT
Camera: ToUcam 740K
Telescope: ETX125 at prime focus
Capture: K3CCDTools. 0% gamma, 1/25", 15% gain, IR light, 510 frames
Processing: Registax. 348 frames stacked. Wavelet 1-3 = 10, contrast 130, brightness -20
