NGC6883  An Open ClusterHome

NGC6883, in the constellation of Cygnus.  Often with open clusters, especially those that are within the milky way, it is difficult to see where in the picture the cluster ends and the background or foreground stars begin.  Even its size is uncertain being variously quoted as between 15 to 35 arc-minutes in the sky and the size of the picture is 35 by 26 arc-minutes.  As a whole the cluster has a visual magnitude of 8.0.  It contains at least 30 stars and is believed to be about 15 million years old.  It was discovered by John Herschel in 1828.
