NGC 2396  An Open Cluster in PuppisHome

NGC 2396, in the constellation of Puppis, is a little-known open cluster containing at least 51 stars.  It was discovered by William Herschel on 31 January 1785 and is some 1900 light years away within the Milky Way galaxy.

This picture was taken with my modified Canon 600D camera attached to my Ritchey-Chrétien telescope.  It can be difficult to distinguish open clusters which are situated within the Milky Way so, in the mouseover, I have indicated where the cluster is, based on its size as given by Cartes du Ceil and its location indicated by in-the-sky.org.
