M56, a globular clusterHome

M56 is a globular cluster although it lacks the bright core typical of globular clusters.  It is 32,900 light-years away and is about 85 light-years across.  It is approaching us at a speed of 145 Km/sec.  Messier catalogued it following observations on 23rd January 1779, and Herschel first resolved it into stars in 1784.  It lies within the Milky Way galaxy, so many of the stars are foreground or background stars unrelated to the cluster.
